Sometimes I get sad that by the time I’ve become a functioning adult with the means to buy stuff, these have become near-unobtainable

What is currently stopping you from getting one now?

The price doesn’t justify it for me. For the price of a really good nick one of these, I could get a few affordable dream cars.

I have the same issue with Turbo Caravans/Voyagers.
Now that I can afford one, I’m not willing to pay what clean examples are bringing.

That’s because the ‘restorers’ are selling complete trash at criminal prices to try and drive the market up for their own profits.
I have never seen a single SJ at any of the ‘big name’ restorers that is anything more than rudimentary maintenance, NAPA parts, some new seat covers, and a fresh Earl Scheib or Maaco paint job.
$70k won’t get you an SSJ, but it gets you really fucking close . You can’t have the custom transmission, modified BW1339, and the supercharger. But you can have a true MPFI setup on a massively overbuilt AMC 360 Gen III, a bulletproof TH400, and a more common driveline similarly bulletproofed.
Oh, and that’s including the frame-off restoration assuming you don’t mind disassembling the interior yourself.

I saw one in a town I was visiting for $19k. Seemed really over priced sing the seats were busted up pretty good, but the outside looked flawless.

Yessir.
I should have bought a nice FJ55 seven years ago, when 1) they still existed in one piece, 2) weren’t 1 billion dollars in decent running condition. Problem is I had, uh, no money at the time, but I could have talked myself into it HAD I KNOWN.

This is why I decided it was time to buy my Jag - you can still get relatively decent running unrestored ones for cheap. I don’t think S3 XJ6 are really that desirable and soon there ’ll be nothing but basket cases or expensive mint examples.

That is trigger I have thought about pulling for years. I worry about cost of ownership looked at an earlier XJ a few years ago, low miles and clean and cheao, but the selling dealer basically warned me off duscussing expensive issues that would likely need addressed.

I’m pretty happy with where it is mechanically, but I admit it cost quite a bit to get it here. $2000 purchase, $2800 transmission rebuild, $3800 to repair worst of the rust (whole new passenger floor pan), $1000 misc engine housekeeping.
Moral: There was a much nicer one I could have bought for what I’ve spent but it’s mine and I love it. Fortunately my wife loves it also.
There’s more that could be done but I think It’ll hold together for a while.
